I am taking vicodin for a really bad tooth ache just untill I get to a dentist tomorrow. I know it wears off in 6 hours, does that mean I can breastfeed my son 6 hours after I take one? I am going to be taking one every six hours ( or after I breastfeed- if I can) and he has never had formula before - what do I do to be safe?

There is a book called Medication's and Mother's Milk. There is usually a copy at the library. I had a terrible delivery with the birth of my son (forceps) and I took Vicodin for two weeks while breastfeeding.

I would definitely call your dr. Vicodin should probably not be taken since you are breastfeeding.

This is something you should have mentioned to the doctor who perscribed the meds. any time you are perscribed a medication the first question you should be asking is can I still breastfeed my child when on this medication. As for how long it stays in your system, weeks, not hours. the pain killing effect only last for a few hours but the drug itself is in your system much longer, just at lower dosage. check with a MD or pharmacist before you do anything.

When you started to take this did you not talk to your Doc about your breastfeeding your son? I think I would call a pharmacy and talk to them, they can tell you what to do!

I don't think you'll be able to nurse him!

ask your doctor. many over the counter meds as well as
prescription will show up in the milk. in fact you should
clear all the vitamin, mineral, and herbal supplements.
there are even some foods that will affect your baby.
call your doctor before taking anything.
