I checked my 2 favorite baby name sites, and they said:

Heather Plant (babynames.com)

English: A flowering evergreen plant that thrives on peaty, barren lands such as those found in Scotland (babyzone.com)

What I like to do (when I am unsure about a meaning) is to visit about 3-5 trusty baby name sites and see what the general consensus is.

Nice name, BTW!

According to www.mybirthcare.com the name Heather is of English origin and it means: "A flowering evergreen plant that thrives on peaty barren lands as in Scotland. Heather." so yeah its the name of a plant. if you can find out why the plant was named "heather" then maybe you'll know more.
