Search on-line for as much info specific to your state as you can get. Remember that there is ALMOST no such thing as a honest attorney and their is absolutely no such thing as an inexpensive attorney.

Try to get your ex to sit down and on paper write down what each of you will get if you co-operate and then subtract at least 20k from both sides and see what the minimum will be using council. Using an attorney will cost a lot of money period. They work very hard to get you mad at your ex and there is no downside for them - the angrier they make the 2 of you the more money they make.

Either contact your locallegal aid assoc for free help r hire a Paralegal if you dont qualify for legal aid. The Paralegal is just as good as an attorney but a whole lot less. The Paralegal does the attorneys footwork anyhow so is very well versed in divorce laws as well as other areas. Check your yGoodluckellow pages for Paralegal and he/she will helpyou get started

There is a few options. First try your counties Legal Assistance office. Try your counties bar association and see if they can recommend an atty that would work with you. If you think you can do it on your own, use the internet for forms, or your counties court house law library for research. Also, call your court house to see what you can do to have your filing fee's waived. That just waives the court costs, but you'll still need to do the paper work on your own.

Lawyers are never cheap, so get over that illusion now.

Lots of people are filing their OWN. Depending upon which state you live, you may be able to do this yourself.

Do some research and find out. My advice is contact an attorney that does free initial consulation and see what they tell you.

Good luck

You don't need a lawyer if you both agree to split peacefully.
Take a look at this resource for instance

divorce is never cheap. an uncontested divorce is cheaper than a contested one. if you are the one filing the divorce, most likely you'll need to concede to other spouse--they can make if difficult for you.
