This might be a common sense question--I don't know--but I am going to give out a survery and one of the questions asks for thier sex. Do I write "What is your SEX?" or "What is your Gender?" Does it actually matter? I looked up the dictionary and I found out that the term "gender" is now used for something else. So I believe "sex" is a better term to use. Could you guys help me clear up this concept. Thanks.

sex is what you were born as, gender is what you feel yourself being so i guess it would depend what you wanted to know.. do you want to know if people are a man/woman or do you want to know what they consider themselves to be? thats how you decide.

i dont think using the term sex is offensive because that is the correct term to use in reference to a persons genatalia. its on every doctors form you ever have to fill out so every person should know what you are referring too.. gender is touchy cuz i know a couple people who's gender is different from their sex

i haven't seen the word sex since the time i read the question, "what did you do last night"

i think you should say

1. Are you a male/female? male Ox
female O
i crossed the male box, coz i am male, so its not gender or sex,

Use "sex". It's still the standard. If your survey is used to establish or referenced in a "trend" in the future, you need to keep the variables consistent for a true trending.

Gender is masculine, feminine, or neuter. Sex is male or female. Gender applies to words & sex to organisms.

The more correct way of asking is "What is your sex?".

it depends what you're trying to get out of people...if you want their biological orientation then put down sex. gender is more in the mind and not dictated by physicality.

Doesn't truly matter. If you read that sex is a more politically correct term, then use it.
