Most human beings living on Mother Earth run after name and fame. The most explicit example of this can be found in Melinda Gates foundation. This foundation has contributed enormous amounts of money for the cause of AIDS... knowing well that donating for such a cause would bring enormous praise to the organization.
What people fail to realize is... when making a donation by the right hand... the left must never know of it... this is the fundamental principle of making a donation as ascribed in various scriptures of the land. The Melinda Gates foundation has always donated money for eradication of AIDS but never for the root cause of it.
Once a Swamiji (religious saint) invited me to his fold to have a chat on spiritual matters! He pointed out that within a period of two years he had collected in the name of religion about $4 million donation. Had he collected the donation in his name... not even a single cent would have been paid by one! He collected the money for opening Vedic schools and colleges with the clear understanding that the donors name would be printed in bold all over.
Most human beings are guided by their bloated ego. Even after the death of the body... all desire their name and fame continuing long after they are gone. Most people earn money using unfair means yet fail to realize... it is the accumulated negative karma that shall rule the roost in next manifestation. What use earning name and fame in present life if we manifest a lower form in the next manifestation (owing to our negative deeds in present life)!
In the black clouds there is always a silver lining... the John Templeton foundation is just doing that. They have a prize for best spiritual entry world over. This prize definitely means something. It is a highly motivating factor for those traveling the spiritual path. Ultimately it is the spiritual masters who finally bring the society out of chaos. They inherently know the root cause of everything. They strike at the roots and eradicate the problem forever. More on donations charity - http://www.godrealized.com/daan_charity.html

It doesn't matter if I am or am not, my influence cannot be muted. Even moving a single stone will influence how things come to pass in that spot (if someone trips, or doesn't, etc.). And we do far far more to irrevocably influence the world around us simply by existing that the ripples (effects) of our lives will carry on forever. Simply by existing I alter wind current, which could start or stop some weather event elsewhere, which would in turn cascade some other event in the future, on and on and on. The ripples of cause and effect are how we are remembered by something far more compelling then human memory. ^_^

I do want to be remembered, because it seems that if I do something important in my life, it should follow that I will be remembered for it. And I most definitely want to do something important with my life!
It seems like a pretty difficult goal, though. Most people don't even know the names of their own great-grandparents. I guess it's a matter of asking yourself what things are really important? Better to live a life filled with kindness, and to be taken for granted, than to be remembered for doing something really horrible.

"what if this birth was a miscarriage and i never existed? have i given something that if taken away, you would miss it?"
living for yourself is no fun, people in general want to contribute something to society, their family and friends, or even to just one person.. i dont think being remembered is the same as being recognized, i think its more about being loved..and of course everyone desires to be loved..

Of course. It's one of my greatest fears, to die and the world won't even notice that I'm gone. Though I know that I'm just a tiny, smaller than a split atom, part of this world and it's existence, I want people to remember me. Why? because i don't know what will happen to me, where I'll go,or if there'll even be a 'me' once i'm gone. At least, if the world remembers me, then i will never be truly gone, I'll always be here, in their memories.
Weird, I know, but hey! I'm a weird person.

I don't want to be remembered because the people that will remember me will probably not remember me for what I want them to, twisting my story to their liking or maybe forgetting pieces here and there. Still I don't want to be forgotten either, because than I never really existed. In the end, I just want to be.

Who doesn't? If you weren't remembered, then it would seem as if your whole life went to waste, and it would have made more sense to stay in bed than make an effort. Being remembered is important, because it adds meaning to your existence, which may seem unusual and pointless at times.
