you're cleaning it. So why when someone is brainwashing you (washing your brain...), it means they're filling your mind with unwanted stuff (dirt)?

Right, it implies that your mind is already filled up with unwanted rubbish and needs to be wiped clean to be refilled with 'desireable' ideas.

Modern techniques originated in the Soviet Union and the KGB. Remember Pavlov and his dog's that salivated when the bell rang? One spring, his laboratory got flooded out, along with the rest of St Petersburg. After a week, when the flood receded, most of his dogs were found dead. A few were still alive, starving and literally inches from drowning. Pavlov found that all of their carefully conditioned responses were completely wiped away by the 'near-death' experience. Stalin realized this was how to re-train people to accept his Marxist Utopia, and the modern era of political brainwashing was born.
