I've had my fish for about 7 months. He's been a healthy fish up until two days ago, when I found him floating at the top of his bowl. At first he was floating upright, he would still swim, and seemed really lethargic, but he has gotten worse. He's floating on his side at the top of water, and he looks like he might be having trouble breathing. I don't see any kind of fungus on him, I don't keep him with other fish so he has not been injured. I've looked up illnesses for betta's but nothhing really matches his sypmtoms. I really love my fish and I don't want to see him die. Please help.

This could be one of two things either constipation or a swim bladder infection. Try not feeding him for a day and then offering him a softened green pea. If he will eat it, it will help with constipation within a day.

If that doesn't work it's a swim bladder infection and he will need to be treated with an antibiotic. Furanace or Maracyn TC would be the best choices. Just treat as directed on the package.

It could be some kind of swim bladder problem. Or that he's just old. A betta's lifespan is about 2 years, and considering most petstore betta's are about a year old already when you buy them, he could be getting up there in age (I'm assuming you got him from a petstore). Just keep researching, and keep him clean and as comfortable as you can.

I am sorry to say but your fish is probably dead. The best thing you can do is try to call a vet fast.
