I think the curse is broken.
The Dutchman, as they said, must have a captain, but I think the reason for that was that the Dutchman was under some kind of curse, ( I think because of Davy Jones's unfaithfulness to the duties he was charged with by Calypso) but apparently the curse was broken when Davy Jones died, as evidenced by all of his crew becoming human again.
Bootstrap tells Will, "one day on land, ten years at sea - it's a high price to pay for what's been done." but he doesn't go so far as to say that he has to do that for eternity - implying that he only has to do it once.
Also, when Jack and Davy Jones are fighiting on the top of the ship, Jack says to Davy Jones, "I can free you," to which Davy Jones replies, "My freedom was forfeit long ago" - I understand that to mean that he would have been under the same conditions (freed after ten years of ferrying souls to the other side) but he betrayed Calypso's trust in him and that's why he was cursed to be the Dutchman's captain forever.
This whole movie was a bit confusing but I loved it anyways - I think the writers may have made it ambiguous on purpose because they wanted to give it a sense of closure but at the same time leave an opening for another movie.
As for the ending scene, I think that was the clincher for me as deciding that Will was back for good - the green flash that accompanied the Dutchman coming back, signaling a soul returning from the dead - Will's soul.
If you remember, they also showed the green flash when Jack and the crew were turning the pearl upside down, right at the point of "up is down" - that was signaling that Jack's soul was returning.
So, to make a long answer short, Will lives!!! yay!!
now bring on POTC: Fountain of Youth.
savvy?

Yes after 7 minutes of credits, they show a ship on the horizon, and you see a woman and a child walking up to the ocean to see the ship. Then they show that the woman is Elizabeth, and you just figure the little boy is their child, finally getting to meet his father for the 1st time. And then you see Will is on the ship. I didn't like they way it ended (before the credits) but if that's true the curse is broken if Elizabeth stays faithful to Will during the 10 years, then I guess I can like it a little bit better.

Will fullfilled his duties for that 10 year gap at the end of the movie and his reward is that the curse is lifted from him and he is allowed to return to land and is free from the dutchman and he can be with his family and the scene explaining this will be in no doubt in my mind when the dvd comes out as a deleted scene which won't be till around December. But the heart thing has me puzzled so the heart just stays in the chest or what?

I missed it in the movie, but it's meant to be if the captain of the Flying Dutchman and his true love are faithful to each other after 10 years then the curse is broken. If they are faithful to each other then there will be the flash of green light when the sunsets. Elizabeth and Will were so they broke the curse. Tia Dalma wasn't faithful to Davy Jones which is what turned him and his crew all fish like and is what made him betray her. I'm going to see it again. So I let you know if it's right or not.

Will can only go onto land every 10 years, so every 10 years he gets to see elizabeth. Will is the captain of the ship until his heart is stabbed. The very final ending just shows elizabeth and a child (will inpregnated her) and the child looks to be about 10 years old. She tells her boy to look out to the ocean and you see a green flash. Which means it has been 10 years and will has kept his promise to elizabeth and is coming back to see her.

there is much debate over the flying dutchman and Will. Ppl. have said that the writers and its said subtly in the movie...that if Elizabeth was faithful and waiting for him in ten years that the curse will be broken and Will would be free to be on land as he please. No more dutchman or anything. There was a scene apparently that explained this but was cut due to time. But if you recall what Tia and Davy were talking about during their encounter...it makes things clear.

Will is cursed to be on the ship for 10 years and brings the dead to the afterlife. For one day he gets to stay on land and see Elizabeth and their son. If he breaks the rules and goes on land when he isnt supposed to, he and the crew turns in to something similar to Davy Jones's crew. The scene where Elizabeth and Will are on the island and she gives him his boot was their first "one day" together.
After the post credits, ten years later, Elizabeth and their son are waiting for Will to come. He appears and unlike Calypso, Elizabeth waits for him after ten years and proves her fidelity. (Because Calypso didnt wait for Davy Jones, he cut his heart out and put it in a box so he wouldnt feel the heartbreak). After that day, Will will return to sea for another 10 years.
Remember when Jack was debating if he should kill Davy Jones? He said he could spend 10 years at sea (which he loves) and one day on land with rum and wenches.

There was a scene removed from the film that had 2 characters talk of the green flash. It meant that they returned from the dead, and if their love was faithful to them, the person was able to be alive again
