There was a lot of discontent in Russia...the peasants, the workers, the non-Russian national minorities....where you have discontent, you have a ripe breeding ground for revolution. Add to it, the Czar's disastrous showing in the field during WW I, Rasputin being detested by everyone, peasant and noble alike, economic inflation as a result of WW I, and the growing hatred of the Czar and all he represented. There is no quick, easy description of the cause of the revolution...it was a number of things, all working together in a very short time frame, that led to the initial riots and revolts, and ended in a full out revolution.

Which revolution? There were two. The White Russians overthrew the Czar and then the Red Russians overthrew the Whites, all within a few months of each other.

It started in 1905, when the Tzar's troops fired on a crowd that wanted a Duma. After that (and even before that) certain elements were active trying to overthrow/assassinate the Russian royal family. It was at this point, that popular opinion is said to have turned, and a regime change was due. The Tsarist government was very inefficient and corrupt. It took war and a quagmire before the Bolsheviks were able to cause civil disorder enough to seize power.

The people of Russian revolted against Ivan the Terrible, who was a selfish, cruel leader. The people wanted change, after a good amount of fighting, The Russian people won. This all happened during the First World War in 1917. It marked the change from Czarism to Communism which became the base of the USSR.
Hope this helps.

It depends on what calendar you use. The Tsar was deposed in March 1917. That much is certain. But when was the Bolshevik coup against the provisional Kerensky government? According to the Julian calendar in use in Russia at that time, the Bolshevik coup occurred beginning on October 25. But according to the Gregorian calendar in use in western Europe and the U.S., it began 11 days later on November 5. Hence the film, "The Hunt for 'Red October.'" The Soviet Union adopted the Gregorian calendar a few years later.

The Csar was getting out of touch with his people but the real defeat of his rule came while he was fighting in WWI. While he was off at the front supporting his troops as any true ruler would, he left his wife Alexandra to rule. She unfortunately was an incompetent ruler who was greatly influenced by a self-styled healer named Rasputin who placed corruptable and incomtetent people in government offices. Alexandra's incompetence eventually forced the Csar home from the front and to give up his title.

The people of Russia got tired of an ineffective leader, Czar Nicholas II, who seemed to be doing nothing to help the people of Russia. The final straw was when he disbanded the Duma, parliament, and refused to hold new elections. Communism looked much more appealing to the poor than what they were currently dealing with.
