My dog's left front paw is red, swollen, and losing hair. He keeps licking it, and it doesn't bother him when he runs. He is not people friendly, so we need something that can be done by us.

Somethinmg about his paw is bothering him, and his licking and biting it is making it worse.

If he will let you, examine his paw carefully, especially between the toes. He may have something stuck in there.

If you can't find any obvious cause, take him to the vet. He could have a stick, foxtail awn, piece of glass, or something like that that has penetrated up into his foot and is setting up an abscess.

It kinda sounds like he might have an infection. Maybe a burr or some sort of thistle lodged into the bottom of his paw. If he keeps biting at it that hard and that much then there is definately some irritation. If you can try petting him or distracting him while you see if theres anything in his foot. If you find something, you might just want to take him to the vet. Otherwise you could try removing it yourself and then wiping it with iodine tincture, peroxide, or applying an anti bacterial salve into the wound a couple times a day until it is healed. If you cant see anything, then it would probably be best just to take him to the vet because maybe its something internal. Another thing, maybe its a bacteria or parasite because my cat kept losing hair for some reason and we think its because of parasites. I hope some of this helped, and I hope you get everything fixed!

It is called Lick-Granuloma. It is usually on one of the front paws, and they will lick it for no apparent reason.
Sometimes they will stop, but usually they will start it back up again...
Definitely check with your vet to make sure this is what it is.
They will give you an antibiotic, sometimes steroids, and something to spray on the wound!
