I am going to repeat an answer I did before on this, I hope it helps:

I am not sure about why they do it when the lights off, but when its on its because of this: they are used to flying at a set angle (say 32 degrees) to rays of light. Rays of light coming off the sun and moon and stars come from so far away that they are essentially straight - ie all parallel. However, rays of light coming from artificial light sources come off in all directions from the source, radiating away from it. So, when the fly, or moth or whatever, sets its course to "32 degrees to the angle of rays", it will spiral into the light source, because everytime it goes a tiny bit forwards, it needs to turn more into the light, and so on and so on, until it gets to the light. Have a go at drawing a spot, with some 'rays' coming out, and draw a line that goes at 32 degrees (or any number) to the 'rays', and compare it to one done with paralell lines - you will see what I mean.

PS As for when the light is off, I said this:

I wonder if they are trying to get as far away from the 4 walls as possible, as they know they cannot escape there, and so end up as high as they can, in the middle of the room - ie where the light is?

Because it probably hurts when they fly in to the wall

They think your light is a night-club and they are having a get together

Maybe that is where the light might be that is attracting them to that point?
