I'm a writer and I was wondering which way to get a book published is better: Self-Publishing/Vantage Press or regular publishing houses.

If you're a writer, a regular publishing house. Even a small publishing house is better than Vantage/Vanity Press. First of all, it's more challenging to get someone to publish your work rather than putting money down to have the press rolling for you. Okay, some are too thin skinned to handle all of the rejections, no thanks, involved with having a publishing company accept your work. Being a writer is not for the faint hearted. Plenty of no thanks. When you do succeed, nevertheless, it is all worth it. One yes outweighs a thousand no thanks.

There are pros and cons on any publisher you choose. What you must do is decide if you want to give up control to the work you have written. If you can achieve getting published with a traditional publishing house it would be great. However, the time that traditional publishing houses have to market the books they have is limited by the funds available.
You also give up some control to the traditional publisher. Also with the traditional publisher the time that your book may be available for purchase may or may not be limited.

I have not had any experience with a vantage press so I will not comment on this type of publisher. I do have experience with a self-pubishing publisher. You have total control of your work. Your book would never go out of print as since books are ordered and then published. Self-publishing tends to have a stigma associated with this type of publishing. I feel this is the best that is available for any author.

I have a book that is self-published through Infinity Publishing. It is titled Integrity: Do You Have It? 2nd edition. The ISBN is 0741429160. I have been pleased with the response and cooperation with my publisher for their commitment to my success.

In any event when you publish a book it is up to you to market the book and bring exposure so people know about it and want to buy it. I would also recommend having a web site if you do not already have one. It is a great way to bring exposure for your book (s) and other writing. Take a look at my web site www.myqualitywriting.com. It is a resource for other writers to market their writing by providing sources of opportunities for exposure for your work. It is also a resource for my books, articles and services.

Hope this helps.

Traditional publishing will take you years to get in. A shrinking industry and long-shot odds will be huge obstacles for you to overcome--in order to get in.

Vanity-press means you pay THEM to publish your book. (I'd stay away from it if I were you.)

Self-publishing is more expensive to do, but if you want a little piece of mind--and you can't get traditionally published--this is the way to go.
