OK, you have to leave y by itself.
so, 2y=6 - x
divide 2 on both sides
y=6/2 - x/2
y=3 - x/2

x + 2y = 6; solve for y.
in order to islolate the "y" term, the rule is to add/subtract the other term. in this case it's the "x" term. you can look at it as subtracting the "x" term from both sides or adding a negative "x" term to both sides.
-x + x + 2y = -x + 6 (on the left-hand side the x's cancel out)
OR
x + 2y - x = 6 - x ( on the left-hand side the x's cancel out)
so you get:
2y = -x + 6
OR
2y = 6 - x
then you divide both sides by 2 to solve for y.
2y / 2 = (-x + 6) / 2 (on the left-hand side 2 / 2 = 1, thus 1y = y)
so, we have:
y = (-x + 6) / 2
or, if you wrote it the other way:
y = (6 - x) / 2

All of them gave yoyu a good answer but look at this one for comparisson
This method is bcalled elimination by substitution
x + 2y = 6 therefore
2y = 6 - x or x = 6 - 2y ( rules of transpositioning values from one side of the equation to another is that you need to change polarity from positive to negative and vice versa)
now you can substitute the value of y in terms of x or the value of x in terms of y.
x + ( 6 - x) = 6 Now you must observe another rule in changing polarity when removing the parenthesis which represent the terms inside as a single quantity.
x - 6 + x = 6 therefore
x + x = 6+ 6 hence
2x = 12
x = 12 / 2
x = 6 now you can go ahead and compute for the real value of y

Just subtract x from both sides, then divide both sides by 2. That would give you, first, 2y = 6-x, then y = 3 - x/2. OK?

Subtract x from both sides to get 6-x, and then divide by 2 on both sides to end up with y = 3 - x/2
