Well a choke is a way of richening up the fuel mixture, diesels very rarely have this but some of the older ones do but they do have glow plugs which heat up the cylinders which make the fuel ignite easier under compression and therefore easier to start. Plus some of the ultra modern diesels increase the fuel injection pressure and therefore puts more fuel into the cylinders, this is a form of electronic choke, sometimes refered to as coldstart.
Hope that helps

Some of the "less technically advanced" do, most diesel engines of the common injector rail or later designs rely on glowplugs to heat the cylinder to improve compressive ignition.

well its not a choke as such it allters the advance on the injection pump for very cold starts!
but i suppose you can call it a choke
some cars have a manuel choke ie mitsubishi opel frontera D have them to
others are auto
hope this answer what is a fine question that most of the people up there have not because they dont know what they are talking about

No.

But they do have combustion chamber pre-heaters (often called "glow plugs") to aid cold starting. The starting procedure is:
Turn on the ignition, but do not operate the starter.
Wait until the orange glow-plug light goes out, then operate the starter.
Generally, if you turn on the ignition, then fasten your seatbelt, the glow plug light will be out by the time you've got your hand back onto the key.

It seems many on here don't know about the old type Sims in line pumps with there cold start button that let the rack open up further for starting in cold weather, you would find them on many older Lorry's,Today most have rotary pumps and glow plugs.

No.Some have heaters for ease of starting. Some static engines have decompression levers to assist starting. All diesel engines are not the same system of/for injection of the fuel;some are direct injection; others indirect injection ,which use a swirl chamber.
