Become a SAG or AFTRA member if you are simply submitting your headshot & resume to them. A lot of agents will not even look at you without one of these because most roles they will put you up for will require one of these.

Another way is to know someone whom has a good agent and get them to put in a really good word about you which will sometimes land you an audition with an agent.

Agents do not cost money out right. They take a predetermined percentage of your income from any roles they book you in. This gives them more incentive to work hard for you.

Do not take an agent that charges you for his services if no role is won. This is a scam.

Agents work in all areas. They don't just work on movies.
It depends on what project the Casting Director is currently casting. Agents submit actors for projects if they have a client that is 'right' for the role.

Agents work on commision, you don't pay them! They get a 10% commission on money the actor, as a client makes, when he or she books a role.

How often do you perform in plays? The next time you are in a play, send a note or post card to the agent and invite him or her to see the show to see your work.
