I mean Im only 20 years old and I can see that the world around me is just getting faker and faker. Ever since high school I noticed that most people just want to be accepted and by achieving this they have to change and forgot their past. If the newest thing is to carry a little dog everywhere you go, youll see a bunch of girls doing that. If the media tells us that guys need to look a certain way to get the hot chick, guys are gonna change so they can achieve that. Why is it that there are few people who are true to themselves and know what really matters in life? The things that matter to me are my family, true friends, future, and happiness ... what do you value?

I didnt just come to the realization of this. Ive noticed it for a long time. Once you start middle school life becomes a popularity contest and I thought it would end towards the last couple years of high school as people would "grow up", but now im a sophmore in a community college and the people around me are practically the same. I hate turning on the news and seeing them talk about Lohan or Hilton at the top of the news. Thats not news!!! A couple of young rich kids acting like idiots isnt news. Maybe if we didnt give them so much attention, people wouldnt be decieved into thinking thats cool or whatever. I think that depresses me more than anything. Hopefully Ill find some normal people at the university im transferring to this fall b/c my city is just so damn fake. Maybe its just Los Angeles -- The fake capital of the world.

Thanks for answering everyone

Shaun and Sonya .. you guys make great points. I dont ostracize people b/c theyre like that .. I talk to people like that all of the time and am also good friends with some. I just wish that theyd show that other things in their life mattered other than that. Im just sick of everyone trying to be cool enough to be accepted by everyone. I just want people to show who they really are and not be afraid to. Im sure that some have probably shown who they are in the past and probably had a bad experience that made them too afraid to put themselves in that position again. I just wish we wouldnt care about what everybody thought about every little thing and just be ourselves.

Before you read this answer you should probably know that is just my opinion. The world has changed over the past 20 years. The main reason for the change is conformity. There are not many people in this world who are willing to take up for what the believe in if their belief will have them ostracized. The plain and simple truth is that the world is just changing. There can be no norm when there is no standard. I value the things that make my life worth living. Friends, family, fun, laughter, joy, and just good times. There is nothing in this world that could change my opinion on the things i value, including someone telling me that the things i love shouldn't be my top priority. Because that is what is making the world the way it is today, CONFORMITY!

Not everyone is effected the same , there are people everywhere that feel like you do , and there are people everywhere that hold little dogs to go everywhere with them.

theres people that will spend 50K on a car and put 10K $ rims on em , some people are materialistic some people arent.

Some people care about celebs lifes , some people could careless.

it what makes this world worth living , I personally wouldent want everyone the same , regardless of how annoying or asinine I thought there views of ways are.

Just remember to respect everyone regardless of there beleifs or ways of life , or how ridiculous you beleive there goals or ideas to be , and dont stereo type because that person you think is a, jerk , retard , fake or for whatever reason, deep down could end up bein your bestfriend or even more and you'd never know because you were ignorant to the person they really are .

Also , no one can say what " really matters " in life , for the fact that it changes from person to person ..
While one persons " goal " in life is to become wealthy , anothers could be to live comfortably with a family careless of wealth.

sorry for the gramatical errors and syntax errors , I'm at work and just trying to get what i think is a valid point accross , and if you are to get only one thing from this. Please let it be the respect everyone part , this world would be much better if everyone were to follow it.

Well I value you pretty much the same thing as you. I think people's values have changed alot though ~ or should I say society's values. I think this is because celebrites have become so much more important in our culture ~ no matter where you look you are always hearing things about them. Soon after you hear so much stuff about them you start to feel inadequate because they seem so glamorous so you start to change so you can be like them. And this is why I think society's values have changed so much.

MTV and BET are just a small piece of the equation. To many negative things are being accepted. Give someone an inch and the take a mile. I value raising my children. Its number one before anything.

Those are the things I value as well. Stay with family and friends that hold your same values and that you value. Ignore the rest. Not your life to worry about. Love what you have and what you value. That's what counts in this life.

Welcome to the world, what you have described is nothing new (sorry bout that) you have simple awakened to the realities of the US. Now what you must do go read and learn what is what and determine what you want to value. Me I value this moments when I can sleep in with my wife and my kid calls for me when she skins her knee.

I don't think the world is getting more fake. I think your cynicism is just a natural part of growing older.
