There are over 4000 college campuses in the USA. Some are in downtown NY or LA, some are in remote rural areas. Some are large - 40,000 or more students - and some have only a few 100 students. Some focus on the arts, some on technical subjects. Some have every student living on campus, some are mostly commuters or evening students.

You really need to ask about the type of college you are interested in, whether someone has a recommendation for that particular type of college in an area where you want to go.

You can get some different listings of highly respected schools at the website of US News.

Whether you are at an elite private school like the Ivies, Duke or UChicago, or at a good state university like Michigan, California or North Carolina, you can get a great education.

I'm amused at the previous answer. Someone needs to take a geography class while in college. Oxford and Cambridge aren't in the United States, and if we are talking world rankings, I'd put them higher.

To the person who posted the question: Top ten colleges based on what? For what? There are a million criteria to evaluate colleges on. A top 10 engineering college is pretty useless to a dancer, for example. Post specifics.
