Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Julia Dent are buried there. The monument was dedicated on what would have been the general's 75th birthday, April 27, 1897, almost 12 years after he had died. Five years later, his wife died and was put to rest next to him. It is the largest mausoleum in the USA
He was America's 18th president, and the man who led the Union army to victory in the Civil War,

By the way, his given name WAS Hiram Ulysses Grant, but by the time of his death, he was using the name "Ulysses Simpson Grant". (He didn't want to be teased about his initials, and the Congressman who sponsored him for West Point thought his middle name was "Simpson".)
