General hand strength is often overlooked. Get a rubber ball and squeeze often; build up to several hundred times a day for each hand.

Hand strength is very important for bat speed.

Your ability to stretch for a throw is very important. You cannot change your physical height; you can improve your flexibility in your legs, particularly your hamstrings. You may never be able to do a complete splits, but your ability to stretch towards the throw will get you the close plays.

You should also work on the quickness of your feet around the bag. Do exercises like jumping rope to improve your nimbleness.

Go to a professional baseball game and only watch the firstbaseman on both teams. Try to know the situation(like 2outs and 2 on etc.) but don't watch the pitcher, catcher or hitter. Concentrate on them and you will have all the knowledge you need to be an effective first baseman. You may even want to take notes. That is the best way to learn how to play first base. Watch all 9 innings.

Practicing catching short hops is a must. Footwork on the bag is huge(where to be in the best position to make the play). Stretching is also very important. I stretch every day during the season-not just during practice and games. But the muscle you need to build up the most is your brain. Know game situatuon and where you are suppose to be and concentrate on making the play before it happens.
