Yep. It's actually recommended that ALL women of childbearing age take a folic acid supplement of 400 micrograms per day. You can find it in the vitamin section at the pharmacy.

And just to clarify, folic acid will not help you get pregnant. What it does is help prevent neural tube deformations (namely spina bifida) in a growing fetus during the first 8 weeks of development, because most women don't find out they're pregnant until at least 4 weeks, taking folic acid prior to learning your pregnant ensures that you will have a high level throughout those vital stages of pregnancy.

Folic acid doesn't actually help you get pregnant. It's just VERY important that you take it while you are pregnant because it prevents lots of different birth defects. In fact, they say you should start taking it before you are pregnant so it can build up in your system. So, if you're trying to conceive, start taking it now. You don't need a prescription. It is found in all prenatal vitamins, or you can just buy folic acid by itself. Just check your local pharmacy in the over the counter section. Good luck.

first let me clarify. Folic acid does not HELP to get pregnant. It helps your baby once you get pregnant to protect from neural tube defects. A normal woman with no history of NTD in her family should take 0.4 mg of folic acid a day, usually in a normal prenatal vitamin. If you have had history of NTD then you need to take 4.0 mg of folic acid (that is 10 times more than normal) and you do need a prescription for that. Good luck.
