I always wondered that. Alligators' sex are determined by the temperature that their eggs are kept at, and I was wondering the same for guppies. Even then, are guppies born or are their eggs laid then they hatch? I wouldn't know for guppies because for other fish it's eggs, and then people say guppies are born. I dont know. I breed the guppies I have and all the babies I have had born turned out male, so i had to keep on getting females, when they die, from the pet store.

Guppies are in fact live bearers and babies are born from the female instead of eggs being laid.

In answer to the temperature question the only answer is maybe. A few studies point to the possibility that more males are born at higher temperatures, but the same studies question if that's not because more females die at higher temperatures instead of actually changing the sex ratio. The change in ratio was gradual and only a small percentage so at no point did they get all males or all females.

So generally speaking odds are against your problem being due to tank temperature. I would suggest you buy some guppies from another breeder or at the very least another shop and see if the same is true for those fish as well.

guppies are live bearers, so they are born. no eggs involved.

as for the temperature, i have no idea. often female guppies will sorta look like darker colored males. i've bred guppies before and had a whole different mix of male and female.

This is a common misconception, the logical conclusion would be half male and half females. I am actually going to try breeding Betta's real soon, so i am curious to know the answer to this really goo question.

Usually they turn out to be half male and half female. This is an interesting question.
