The 700R4 and 4L60E transmissions, not sure which you have.. "Are not your daddys oldsmobiles anymore." http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/4l60e.htm
700R4's have a adjustment known as the T.V. cable which is often mistaken as a "downship cable" and is usually misadjusted..
For It's correct adjustment and other 700r4 info. see next link.http://www.700r4.com/

4l60'S are electronic transmissions and kinda complex, lots of things can cause shift point problems.Heres a good forum for 4L60E's
http://www.automotiveforums.com/t643499-93_4l60e_tranny_problems.html
Speedometer on your vehicle is electronic, may not have gotten hooked up, check connection at rear of trans.
Speedo inop. will cause other problems, E.C.M. (computer) uses its input as reference for other systems.. Shift points, sometimes A.B.S. and Engine controls..
Heres a great Suburban forum with speedo and elect. info

Fix Speedo first and see what happens!

Check the vacuum connections at the top rear of the engine, comes through the Pass. side right where the motor & tranny connect. If not clearly visible start it & listen for a vacuum leak. There is also a solenoid on the drivers left rear of tranny that could need replacing. This is easier to diagnose by a big white cloud, or slippage type reaction from standstill. If its none of this it may just be a breaking-in thing. Check with your tranny person to make sure it's not harming it!!!!!

Obviously whoever did the rebuild screwed it up dear. I hope it came with a guarantee...as for the speedo not working, the doofus either didn't reconnect the speedo cable to the tranny (that's where the speedo comes from in older (not digital) cars...if you did the rebuild yourself I don't know what to say, lots of possibilities for why it's not shifting...missing gasket will do it among a myriad of other things...bands not adjusted correctly, etc, etc...like I said hope you have a guarantee

Probably assembled wrong. The speedometer drive gear might be missing the keyway that drives it, and that may be the reason not working right. Key may also drive rear pump.
No pump, no drive. Don't remove transmission, it can be fixed from in car. Just pull tail houseing and look for missing parts. Check plastic gear driving speedo

have you checked the transmission fluid? does it have the correct amount? have you had the linkage checked (is it adjusted correctly)? it's possilbe that your transmission linkage might need to be adjusted? if you just put the tranny in after a rebuild, you need to have it checked asap. you could possibly mess it up, and they might not warranty it? i'm not sure if your speedometer is manual (gear driven), or electric, and what controls the shifts? anyway, more information might help. g/l

edit: what kind of transmission is it? 700r4 or what (i'm sure it has overdrive?)?

check at the rear of the trans on the drivers side, the speed sensor is there, it has an electrical connector, make sure it's plugged in, if it is have the shop recheck its work. if the speed sensor is not working you will not have a speedo and the trans will not shift. good luck.

have your speed sensor checked. they may not have adjusted it right or not replaced it. If thats not the case then it may be inside the tranny.
