Bow string needs to have as little twist as possible.
So modern string is made out of many thin strands of man-made fibre, only bound together where there is a serving on it.
If you want to make your own, you can go to a bow-maker site, there are many, and read the instructions.
Any good shop that sells bows should have the string for you, as well as ready-made bowstrings.

Old fashioned ways include, silk, tendons of animals dried and split, flax, and are not a tenth of the strength of modern bowstrings for the same diameter.

Jake has given you a good answer. Nylon string, when under a load, will stretch several inches, making it worthless as a bow string.
