(Wouldn't advise reading this if you have not seen the finale!!)
Well, let's look at the facts.
a) The funeral director referenced a "him" in the coffin, which rules Juliet out (unfortunately for all of those who are not Juliack shippers).
b) Jack responds "either" when asked if he is a family or friend. This would seem to infer that the person in the coffin is part of the island community (it would have been more interesting if it had been a woman in the coffin, because then we could have suspected Claire, but alas). He would not have responded this way if the person in the coffin had been an enemy, such as Henry Gale/Ben Linus, but might have if it were one of the Island A-Team.
c) The obituary notes the death of "J. Langermen", who is survived by a teenaged son. J.L, obviously, are the initials of John Locke; however, he has no offspring that we know of (yet). The only character that we KNOW has gotten off the island besides Kate and Jack is Michael; if you buy into this whole flash-forward thing, it seems to be a reasonable assumption that Michael might have changed his name to avoid awkward questions as an 815 survivor, and we know he would be survived by a then-teenaged Walt.
d) Several spoiler sites noted that the producers asked Harold Perrineau to return in the season finale to reprise his role as Michael, but he declined, due to his shooting schedule for 28 Weeks Later and his dissatisfaction with the resolution of his storyling. Since then, people have speculated that he was either supposed to drive Locke into action in the grave (a role fulfilled by Walt), or that he was supposed to be revealed in the coffin.

We really DO NOT know.

I think the coffin is way too short to be any adult we've met as well as too short to be Walt's casket.

I think it is someone we have not met yet.

The article Jack had:

"The body of John Lantham of New York was found shortly after 4 am in the 4300 block of Grand Avenue. Ted Worden, a doorman at the Tower Lofts complex, heard loud noises coming from the victim's loft. Concerned for tenants' safety, he entered the loft and found the body hanging from a beam in the living room. According to Jaime Ortiz, a police spokesman, the incident was deemed a suicide after medical tests. Latham (sic) is survived by one teenaged son. Memorial services will be held at the Hoffs-Drawlar Funeral Home tomorrow evening."

On several sites, it's said that the funeral was for a man originally from New York, who hung himself in a L.A. apartment (this is from the clippings). His first initial is J. and his last name ends in -anthom (or -anthem). Chances are that it's a character that has yet to be introduced. My bet was going for Hurley!

i think it was sawyers funeral.

cause apart from jack and kate sawyer dosen't really have any other freinds (well maybe sayid, hurley) and he has no family. kate probably did not go because sawyer probably hurt her in some way (emotionally).
