"And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
'Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA."

"Somathus", I figured someone would attack Lee Greenwood ... just to clear up any confusion and misinformation, he wrote the song in 1984, not to make money off of 9/11. He got married at the age of 17, had children by the time he was eligible for the draft for Vietnam, and was given a 3-A hardship classification. On top of that, his draft number never came up. Check your facts before pointing fingers.

"Heavy Metal" - the word America is a colloquialism in common usage that means the U. S. of A. That is supported by the fact the the name of the song is "God Bless the U.S.A." Silly.

In Beeville Texas a war memorial honoring veterans killed in four separate wars, was destroyed. (Hat Tip to Bob for the email)
That memorial once stood as five granite panels, with the names of 45 veterans who lost their lives, paying the ultimate sacrifice. But Tuesday, the memorial lies in pieces at the city's maintenance yard.
Local veterans said they're not sure when the memorial was vandalized. They say it looks like someone took their car and just rammed into it. The memorial was erected in 1989 and residents there said they're devastated by it's vandalism, because it's more than just rock - it's a symbol of freedom.
"This particular war memorial has World War I, World War II, Korean and Vietnam. And so it has quite a bit of names," Vietnam War veteran Ram Chavez said. Now, veterans there are asking for help from anyone who can help raise the money to replace and repair that memorial.
This memorial is important to this town, to the families of the fallen and to veterans across the country.
This is not a political issue, it is not a Republican nor Democratic issue, we may all disagree about Iraq, but I see Republicans and Democrats alike claiming they support our troops, I see people saying they honor our veterans.... so let us do so.

I was proud to be an american, until the 2004 election, and a President, that started a useless and frivolous war, was re-elected. It's more of an embarassment now. We as a nation now condone torture of prisoners, and the holding of them indefinitely without trials. Fear mongering to herd the ignorant. Illegal wiretapping. Profiteering all the way up to the VP. If you are black, I would imagine that you have a entirely different opinion about that freedom. If you are not Christian, you have to face the overwhelming Christian bias towards everything.
This country is no longer the standard bearer for human rights, and that is quite sad. We are just another ignorant bully on the block.

Huh, last time I checked we were still at war. Somehow I doubt Lee enlisted. He made that song to make money off of people's pain after 9/11. Some patriot. Put your money where your mouth is, grab a gun, and go give our boys a hand.
Fat chance.
I AM proud to be an American. I am just not very proud of the current state of our beloved country.
edit=Touche. I got him confused with Alan Jackson.

the word america is a name given by the spanish crown to the continents discovered for the europeans in 1492 honoring an italian cartographer who worked for the spanish crown (amerigo vespicci italian ,americo bespicio ,spanish)
Only in american made dicctionary we found the word "America " linked as a country name .
so I do believe that heavy metal question was very valuable!!

No. Most emphatically not. When I go abroad I tell people I am Canadian. But grateful, yes. I feel certain obligations but none of the jingoistic flag waving Pavlovian patriotism some of these responders do. The lee Greenwood song is lame.
If we are to be an imperialist war mongering state, after somebody's oil, we have " Columbia The Gem of the Ocean"
as an honest bellicose anthem. I would NEVER sing that song. It insults ones intelligence.

Yes I'm proud to be an American and I'd fight to the death anyone who says differently. We're the best the world has to offer, that's why everyone wants to be here! I refuse to support them anymore, it's bad enough to have to support the jails!

I am not American, but I think people should state what they are proud of and is this something special that can't be found anywhere else?
On a separate note I think Americans have things to be proud of but a lot to be ashamed of..
