the lawn mower gets primed about 3 times (with the little vinyl cover push button) and will go 20 seconds and then it kicks off.

like most people at the beginning of the mowing season your mower wont start up and stay running. take the air filter off completely. prime it 5 times. then start it. if it starts dying manually pump fuel with the primer bulb into the engine. it will start chugging along just fine. put your air filter back on and start your cutting year!

Sounds like the carb need to be throughly cleaned! The prime will last about 5-15 seconds then the carb should have picked up by then. However if the carb is clogged, it won't continue to fuel the engine- the engine dies.

Yup, the carb needs to come off and be cleaned, put it back together with a repair kit and make sure the fuel tank is clean. Water will get in through the gas cap.

You need to get the carb cleaned. It is not getting any fuel through the primary jet passages. My hunch is that you left gas in it all winter. Even if not, you still need a carb cleaning. In order to do a thorough job the carb has to be completely disassembled. Take it to a qualified mechanic.
