I don't know why the NCAA does not go after Notre Dame like they went after the schools with Indian mascots or symbols. I don't see why the Fighting Irish is any less racist than Chief Illiniwek or the Fighting Sioux.

The best symbol? Chief Oseola at Florida State, burying the spear in the field before the game. The late Chief Illiniwek at Illinois was right there with him. Tommy Trojan comes in a distant second.

Costumed sideline Mascot? Buckingham Badger, Wisconsin.

Live animal mascot? Tough call between UGA the bulldog at Georgia, BEVO the longhorn at Texas, Ralphie & Chip the buffaloes at Colorado, and the LSU tiger. UGA is probably the safest mascot, the tiger the most dangerous, if they were to get loose.

But the best, and most unusual, mascot in college sports is the Southern Illinois Saluki. What is a saluki? Salukis are a breed of Egyptian hunting dog, often considered the fastest of all dogs. And SIU is the only university or college - in the whole world, not just the USA - to have the Saluki as its mascot. The live saluki mascots are beautiful creatures, while the costumed Grey and Brown Dawgs are about as good a costumed mascot as you can get.

Check out the massive Longhorn of The University of Texas. During football season, he is on television a lot. Texas A & M has a collie who is lively. Recently, she took on Baylor's black bear. Yes, she is still alive. I know Colorado has a Buffalo, but Bevo, the Longhorn is big enough to be more impressive with his incredibile horns. Go Big Twelve.
