Check out the Song of Albion Trilogy from Stephen Lawhead. It puts a new twist on some of the Celtic legends and myths.
Here's the premise.
Lewis Gilles is a student at Oxford University. His wealthy roommate, Simon, gets the urge to chase a tabloid story that ends up with him and Lewis getting transported into some parallel, yet unmistakingly historical, location in the middle of a Celtic war.
There's fighting, there's magic, there's conspiracy, there's murder, and there are beautiful women. What more could you want?
Lewis turns out to be smart, much stronger than he originally thought, and I can't say much more without giving away the plot line. But you'll definately NOT be disappointed.
The books are:
1) The Paradise War
2) The Silver Hand
3) The Endless Knot
As a fair warning... the main character "starts" out physically weak, but wait until you see what he becomes!
These are by Stephen R. Lawhead.
Although I highly recommend buying the book, you can read the first one online at

the best books I have ever read to this day were the dark elf trilogy by R.A. Salvatore. the hero in those books isn't really in your face or anything but he is a tough mother. but if you start reading them make sure you do in order some books you can read randomly and still get the just of what was going on but these ones you have to read in order to get the full effect or even know whats going on for that matter

This isn't scifi or fantasy, but I would recommend The Count of Monte Cristo.
