I'm a dad - my daughter is only 8, but me and my wife are absolutely not going to have our daughter leaving the house looking like a hooker.
Most of the girls wearing the trashy fashions, and piling on the makeup look horrible anyway. Most don't even realize what it is they are emulating.
When she gets old enough to date, I'm buying a shotgun so I can be sitting out on the porch when dude shows up cleaning it - 'you have her back by six now - you hear??'.

I totally agree my daughter is barely a teenager and we are constantly at each others throats over outfits, make up and piercings, i tell her she cannot dress like that at her age and eventually after much explaining i get her to dress down, we argue over her wearing make up too, every morning she is putting on face powders and mascara, she tells me the reason for this is that her complexion is poor, when i was her age i couldn't care less about my complexion, i probably didn't even know what that word meant!! and recently she asked for her tongue pierced!!!, she is obsessed with her weight, again that is something that i didn't care about until after i had children, i eat healthily and so do my children i work out daily but that's the way it has always been, its not like she see's me stood there like some mothers moaning about rolls and flab, so where is she getting this obsession from as she is not fat at all, when i was a teenager all i cared about was if i had good trainers, it was more fashionable then to wear that baggiest clothes you could find, and there was a tiny amount of flesh to be seen if any, its scary that in just over a decade we've gone from that to this, makes me worry for my future grandchildren.

I think the pendulum swings one way on tastes, then the other. Each generation it changes. The norm for the next generation will always be out of kilter from what you think should be right.
In other countries, the same thing is going on. What is acceptable in that country is not in your own at this current time.
I try to look at what the majority of the other girls in the school are wearing, and I try to use that as my standard. It is usually more conservative than a daughter may want, but it beats the "but everyone is wearing it" mentality.

It's a difficult thing when everything under the sun can now be called sexy. I mean what the hell is a sexy chair? A sexy hair cut? sexy everything! Kids are under the mistaken impression that cute, nice, beautiful are the same as sexy and it just isn't true. They see overly sexy images in music videos and TV and movies and on the street and they want to wear what's "popular" so they wear the wrong thing and have no idea they are giving a misleading impression to people who don't know them.

I think certain age groups should be allowed to wear certain things. I have a daughter (2 in august) and a son (4 mths) and I be damned if I let my daughter go out this house in something not suiting for her age. Girls should cover a little. Haulter tops should be covered neatly. Mini shorts and skirts just need to go, that's screaming, "I am a slut, please rape me and/or take advantage of me!" Now adays it is popular to look slutty, and our poor kids want to be popular and fit in so they think the only way is to be like "other girls." I am only 20 but I wouldn't be caught dead in "slutty" attire. What's the point? To attract a man? You can attract one covering up a little more also. That man is going to see how you dress and is going to take advantage of you. Why put yourself through that? Under 18 breasts need to be covered. Panty lines shouldn't cross a kid's mind, sex is so evident now in 2007, especially in younger kids in the USA. Why do we want people to think we are slutty? That's not cool or "popular", to be slutty.

I'm not a mum but I was very shocked (and I'm not shocked easily) when I was in a department store and in the children's clothing section, I saw padded bras and black lacey underwear for little girls as young as 5!!! Just ridiculous! I've seen little girls wear little high heels. Why? What are their parents thinking? Why is it not cool to just be a kid these days and wear jeans and sneakers? I think you are very articulate.
