I actually just watched some interesting videos on 60 minutes regarding this exact subject. Check them out and decide for yourself. http://60minutes.yahoo.com/segment/68/gay_or_straight

They HAVE proven that the more older brothers a man has, the more likely he is to become gay. Ammount of older brothers does not GUARANTEE homosexuality, but with each older brother that a man has, his chances of being gay increase by 1/3. Very interesting. Curiously, it only applies to right-handed men, and does not apply to women and sisters. Its detailed more in the videos. They have a theory that it has to do with the womans body building up antibodies when she is pregnant with a son, because since he is male, he is a foreign object in her body. Therefore, certain things may happen while the child is a fetus that affect his hormones, and increasing his chance of being gay.

They also did a study on rats. If a male rat was given a shot of female hormones right after birth, that rat would spend the rest of its life acting like a female. They gave baby female rats shots of testosterone, and they forever acted like male rats. Weird, huh?

My personal theory is that homosexuality could be caused by hormones, genetic pre-disposition, or environment. It could be just one of those things for a certain person, or any combination of those things.

More importantly, we should keep in mind that it really doesnt matter WHY a person is homosexual. What really matters is that they are respected for their lifesyle, whether their homosexuality is a "choice" or simply the way they were born.

It is the way you are born and the way the chemicals in your brain work.

There can be a tendency toward "gayness" within families. Some believe it can to do with how much estrogen a male fetus is exposed to. Some think it's has to do with birth order.

There are several members of my family who are gay. I have a friend with a gay brother and sister and son...

What makes me gay is that I'm emotionally and sexually attracted to other men.

As to why I am gay, no one has the definitive answer. As with most developmental outcomes, homosexuality likely arises from the complex interaction of several innate (e.g., genetic, hormonal) and external (e.g., environmental, cultural) factors.

I do not feel as though I had a choice in feeling romantically attracted to males. I did make the choice to become comfortable with my feelings and express them publicly.

But not everyone with similar feelings makes similar choices. Some folks choose instead to become pastors and have families while snorting meth off some male prostitute's buttocks on the weekends.

(And somehow they still manage to think of themselves as "completely heterosexual." Hmm.)

I have always known that I was gay. I think that it is genetics. But there are a lot of people on here that say no. Personally I think they are full of excrement.

What makes anyone "straight?"

The real answer is: No one knows precisely what it is that "makes one gay." There are hypotheses with some valid reasons, but the upshot at this time is that no one knows -- just as, IMO, no one knows what makes a person straight.

I personally think that it is an instilled characteristic from birth. And no, religion doesn't make you gay, lol
