Algebra is like life because both involve approaching questions or problems using the same methodology. In life, as in Algebra, we are asked to solve problems--some simple, and some very complex--by taking the fragments of information we have, consulting a set of predetermined rules or guidelines, and using our judgement to apply the rules to the problem, thereby solving it.

In almost all situations in life there are some things we know (the "givens") and some things we don't know. The "rules" we use could be our own moral or ethical code, our religious beliefs, our personal goals and ambitions, the guidance of others, etc. So we take the problem and look at the givens. Then we look at our rules. Then the most important part of the process happens......we use our minds to figure out exactly how the rules do or don't apply in this particular situation. This leads us to a solution. The process requires that we apply careful logic and analysis to all aspects of a problem, just like in Algebra.

The examples of this are endless. Everything from deciding whether to go out with someone, to deciding what to major in at college, to deciding on a career path, to changing jobs, getting married, etc etc etc. In all of these cases we have only a part of the information we need to be sure we are drawing the right conclusions and making the right choices. We have to rely on the work of others who have gone before us, and trust our own ability to apply those lessons to our unique situation.

This is why Algebra is so important. It's during our time in school that we learn (or don't learn) how to discipline our minds, sort out the important information from the irrelevant, and develop confidence in our ability to attack a problem and figure out how to find the solution. This is what education is all about. Algebra is one of the greatest ways to show our minds how to do this and give it practice!

Algebra is like making decisions. Take for example the equation A + B = C. Now say that where you are in life is A and where you want to be is C. You need to figure out what you are missing in the equation to get from A to C. Sometimes in life you really need to look at where you want to go and change what you are doing, by adding, subtracting, etc, behaviors or situations. It's really all about the analytical thinking process involved. Figuring out how to get the "right answer" for yourself

problems in life can become very complex and must be broken down into understandable parts in order to be solved. Life is like on long problem to be solved, and the better you learn your lessons the first time around, the more difficult they become as you grow older as in Algebra you build upon basic skills

Algebra is like life; many concepts are hard to grasp, but the ones that you do grasp help you understand the greater/whole picture.
