Most computers use fans to cool the CPU and the rest of the motherboard. Fans circulate the air replacing hot air with cooler air (i.e. ventilation). Shuttle computers use fans but, in addition, use what they call "heat pipes" to displace heat from the CPU to the outside. The pipes run alongside the CPU. The pipes are filled with both liquid and gas. As the liquid and gas is moved past the CPU, they absorb the heat generated by the CPU. The heated liquid and gas then continues to flow away from the CPU. Thus, you essentially moved the heat from the CPU to the outside. You can think of it like a car engine. You put coolant in the radiator, the radiator circulates the coolant close to the car engine, the coolant absorbs the heat and moves it elsewhere thus allowing the engine to cool. I have a Shuttle computer for 4 years and works well. In addition, since there are fewer moving parts, it very quiet.

shuttle cases have good airflow around the components. i don't see cooling as a issue in the average airconditioned home.
