What pH is it in soils that stops the activity of most microorganizms?

pH is a measure of acidity and baseness. If the soil is too much in either direction, most things cannot live. 7 is neutral, below 7 is acidic and above 7 is basic. There are some organisms that are adapted to live in basic or acidic conditions but most organisms need close to neutral conditions in soil or water.
