There could be many reasons for this.
1) You could be out of range. Try moving closer to the router and see if the disconnects continue.
2) Other wireless devices operating at 2.4Ghz. Move cordless basestations and handsets away from the router and your computer, atleast 10 feet.
3) Wall, Ceilings and floors. If they are made of concrete or brick or Alot of aluminum foil cover insulation will degrade your signal when passing through walls.
4) Move the router to a high point. It is better if the routers antenna is atleast 6 feet off the ground. RF Propogates like a umbrella.

Most likely your issue is with the radio reception on the Wi-Fi signal. In your case the floor between your computer and your parent's access point is interfering with your reception.
A simple solution would be to move your computer to the spot upstairs that is closest to the location of the access point. (i.e. right above it).
If the access point can be moved, then moving it to a more central location in the structure and nearer to the downstairs ceiling will help.
Based upon your description, I'm assuming your computer is a laptop with a PC Card wireless adapter. You could try replacing the wireless adapter with an adapter that has a better antenna (if you go this route, it also wouldn't be a bad idea to get a PC Card from the same manufacturer as your parents wireless router/access point)
If none of these solutions helps, then your parents might consider higher gain antenna for the access point. Many wireless routers and access points have simple BMC plugs attaching the antenna to the unit. Unfortunately some of the higher gain antenna can be quite expensive.
Hope this helps

What might work is running a wireless access point half way in between the router and your pc.

see if you are able to move the router to a more central location between all sharing computers or adjust the rx/tx rates on your wireless connector to maximum setting however this WILL use more of your laptop battery consumption.

Hi,
I think you have the same problem that i did with my D-Link Wi-Fi Adapter (it didn't work very well) just go and buy a another cheep (about £15) "USB Wi-Fi LAN Adapter" and install it and I bet all your problems disappear. This will help you. If you need any further help please E-Mail me back.
