The benefits are quite subjective. Some people argue boosts in economy and more jobs are positives of urban sprawl. And in some ways they are.

But the detrimental effects are not subjective. Air pollution, decrease in native plant populations, increased automobile use, decrease in habitat for native animals. The list goes on.

At first glance it seems to be a progressive thing but in the long run it will hurt the environment and us.
