When should i start taking her for lessons? She already swims like a fish at 5 years old.

If she can already swim I'd say to add gymnastics to her skills. Since divers are arial gymnasts who land in the water she needs both skills. She's still developing so a gymnastics program will help her develop that part of the sport. Once she is older, find a team or program for her and see if she can get in. With a swimming and gymnastics background I can't think of many programs that wouldn't welcome her with open arms!!!

Good luck ( =

My daughter was an Olympic calibre diver who gave the sport up after the Junior Olympics.

We had to beg the coach to start her at age 8 because he said the childrens bodies change so much at that young age, he preferred to train a diver who had attained her full growth. As it turned out my little eight year old grew to be 5'10" which is a disadvantage in dving. Just naturally harder to control a larger body than a small one.

I would get your little girl into gymnastics and keep her swimming for a few more years.

Try your local pool and see if they have swimming clubs, or if her school has a swimming club, the swimming teachers there should be able to help. She's a bit young for diving lessons but if you can find a swimming teacher who does both that might be your best bet. My brother used to dive competitively he started through swimming clubs at the local pool when he was 9 or 10.

Look for a program. Park districts, universities, and YMCAs often have diving. Talk to the coach. You can (and probably should) start her off slowly, like taking one lesson every week or two. That way she can find out if she likes it, but still explore other interests.

now is a good time because you learn more and over come fears easily compared to being 8 years or older...
