Well dang! I came to answer this Q--but open thoughts has covered it all.......and I should know--I worked 10 years in the system doling out benefits to those who know how to 'work' the system in order to avoid work. Its getting harder in Wisconsin thanks to W-2--but there are always loopholes these sewer rats exploit. I've seen many familes work their way up and fight their way out--which is what the system was designed to do (until the libs perverted it and made it a way of life for some) and it does wonders for a family emotionally.
There are many people who are honestly disabled or in a temporary bad situation (divorce, plant closings etc) and these are the people the system SHOULD BE helping. However--due to the horrible abuses by the able bodied slackers--many families who truley NEED the help can not get it---and there are many many more familes who REFUSE handouts-and make due with what they can.
Kudos to your family!

Some folks have a mixed up idea of what the government is for. Our government is there to provide freedom to everyone who lives here and is a citizen. Those that come to America illegally (Mexicans) do not belong here and those are the people who take away jobs from Americans that need the work. I think I would rather have ANY OTHER RACE than Hispanics in America these days. Why? Because most every one else is clean and seem to really care about America - enough to at least learn the official language and customs. If you come here - have enough gumption to go to school or get assistance to learn the language and the customs of the land -after all you are in America!

You have asked a question that should garner headlines but NEVER will with today's bias in the media.
I have a theory that the basis of the problem lies in the education system.
Back in the sixties and early seventies, draft dodgers went to college to stay out of the military.
A very large per centage of them went into teaching. Why? because it was an easy subject that virtually guaranteed them that their grades would be high enough to keep them protected from the draft!
Please note that both career choices are in fields where productivity and responsibility are difficult to measure.
The second favorite subject was journalism.
Those anti-war draft dodgers got the Socialist/Marxist education they wanted and are now teaching (indoctrinating) today's youth.

No, however the humans will have to have a hazard to get the equal wellness care the federal government officers get. By the best way, what you look to feel in is should you can't manage to pay for wellness care, that is your obstacle. That seems like "survival of the fittest". That is a Karl Marx notion. You do detect that Communism ideals, correct?

Because self reliance is hard. Investing is risky. Working late is not easy to do. Study and persistance is dificult. When FDR started the new deal Socialists saw it as a way to get elected. They used the State to control economics. People who work hard, invest, and take ricks are the most likely to succeed or fail. They are the most likely to hire employees and provide other people with a living.

Because the leaders in the democratic party tell them so. They put forth entitlement programs which not only do not hold them accountable, but they even punish those who try to better themselves.
True scenario. A neighbor I had was a single mother with one son. She received rental assistance, food stamps, AFDC (aid to families with dependent children) WIC, energy assistance. A total of around $1,500.00/month, and this was 14 years ago. She was hired part time and would have earned around $400.00/month. Between rental assistance going away fully, reduced food stamps, reduced AFDC and energy assistance going away, she would have lost $700/month in benefits, so she would have worked 20 hrs a week and it would have cost her $300/month.
This is how entitlement programs are set up because the democrats who designed them, designed them to keep the poor from improving themselves. If that were reversed, and you could earn $700/month and lose $400/month, then perhaps people would take those low paying jobs that "no Americans would do"
Okay, I take that back...many WOULD take those jobs.
BTW...dumdum, your name appears to say it all. The question is not referring to those who pay taxes, but those who do not. Those on welfare, those who expect help with their rent, etc. When mentioned, health care was linked to those who work. As for Socialized health care. You should really go to Canada and see what kind of a bastardized system THAT is. They pay unbelieveable taxes, and their high gas prices was supposed to pay for 100% of their health care. Thank you, no! I will work to provide my own health care. I have my whole life, even when it was my second job which paid the premiums.
Lizzy, other than MANY of those from south of the border, people from other countries come here and PAY THEIR OWN WAY! I have a very good friend who immigrated here LEGALLY from Africa, and had very little. He will tell you quite simply...if you are in American and cannot pay your own way, shame on you...unless INCAPABLE of working, anyone who cannot earn their own living is not trying!!!
Finally, it is not Christian to enable people to sit around and do nothing while we are working our butts off. It is Christian to give people opportunities to help themselves. In America, opportunity is unlimited.

Well I do believe it says a pursuit life, liberty and happiness somewhere in there. So if you're providing life, under the " Judeao-Christian" principles americans always say they live under, then of course taking care of people who are unable to work, make low wages, are vulnerable , are part of your vision statement , who you are as americans.
Is it not the statue of liberty which says give me your tired, your hungry , your weary and let them come into america?
With every turn of any century, this no -nothing philosphy manifests itself, based on fear, ignorance and as long I got mine Jack attitude screw you.
You're in Iraq telling them that the Suni Shiites and Kurds have to learn to live together, but you're sure demonstrating a crummy example with your attitudes on immigration how not to do it.
You don't even take in the people in Iraq who put their lives in peril to help you! Whoo hoo a big wopping 250Iraqis last year any maybe up to 7000 by 2010, how generous and thankfrul for their help you are.
And those people crossing the border illegally, businesses , farms are sure happy to have them work, take in their crops etc. so why shouldn't they receive fair compensation and hospital care , because you know big business and big farm ain't gonna have medical facilities to care for them.
Frankly in a country the size of the US, as ' rich' as the US always says it is , 45 million people have no health insurance!
The US is always saying it's a ' Christian" country, well then why not exercise some of those ' christian' principles and take care of the vulnerables, like you say you'd take care of Jesus. what you do to the least of them, you do to me. Oh and love your neighbours and he's not talking about your immediate neighbourhood here people, as you would yourselves.
Lots of immigrants have come from many countries and worked hard to be Americans and some of them didn't always come the legal way but they've made significant contributions to america and her culture and her success and it's really awful on this Memorial Day when so many have died trying to keep these freedoms you'd post a rant like this.

If it's my tax money how is it a handout? You can pay your taxes for nothing and to pay for Bush's and Hillary's inflated salaries and health benefits, but I rather get some of that money back--even if it means free health care for all tax payers. Ooh, the horror!!!!
I agree that getting your money back would be nice. But unless it's retroactive for all these past years we've been robbed, it still won't pay for most medical bills for surgeries and expensive medications and therapies. In countries that have universal health care, the hospitals are receiving money from taxes, so all work is either free or affordable and the hospitals are not in danger of closing. And it doesn't have to result in more taxes, funds for the illegal war and other wasteful spending can go into universal health care. Funds that are being used by the poor for medical care can be diverted into universal health care.
Having to rely on the few businesses that provide health care benefits is not working because the few cannot sustain the majority. It's better that we have universal health care for all tax payers than having people rely on Medicare (which is our tax dollars going only to the poor and illegals), isn't it?

I'm very proud of your family's immigration history and for making their own way! THAT is how it SHOULD be done!
I'd have to agree that openthoughts pretty much answered it! And clk4cb definitely added some frosting to that cake...
As much as a blabber-typist as I tend to be, I really can't add anything to it, just had to sound off and let you folks know you NAILED it! :)
