I want to buy a Nissan Altima, and the standard brakes are 4 wheel disc brakes. When you get into the higher models, it goes with ABS brakes. Please help explaining the difference, because I cannot find any information on the internet!!

4 wheel disc brakes simply mean that they are disc on all four wheels as opposed to drum brakes in the back like usuall. Disc are better, easier to fix but you wouldnt be able to tell the difference anyway. Now ABS means Anti-locking Brake System. Now this means that when you slam on the brake pedal to stop real fast that your wheels will not lock up and you will not slide. Makeing you stop faster and with less effort. Its great in the rain or ice it helps SOOO much. in my opinion you should ALWAYS buy a car with ABS its a huge difference, and much much safer.. Its worth it, expecialy if you are buying a new car. ...good luck and if u still dont understand ,,write me.

Four wheel disk brakes stop faster (where you can skid) ABS has a pumping to it as if you were stompping up and down on the brake for emergencies like off the road into gravel or snow... the ABS model probably comes with four wheel disk brakes, its only the ABS feature that is an extra.

The wheels are all the same, they go round and round and both are good. Alloy wheels do have a better appearance but also easier to damage. As for ABS brakes. Yes they do have an advantage over conventional brakes as they direct the breaking to the wheels with the most traction. However we have managed for a hundred years without them.

It's not so much a difference as it is an option.

ABS doesn't refer to the type of brakes, it's a device that prevents the wheels from skidding regardless of what type of brakes the car has. (Although I don't know of any cars with drum brakes that have ABS)

Since the front wheels of a car get better traction during stopping, some cars only have front wheel disc brakes because the front wheels do 70% of the stopping. Cars with four wheel disc brakes have either proportioning valves or smaller brakes on the rear to achieve this 70% ratio. Cars with ABS don't need proportioning valves or smaller rear brakes because the rear wheels won't lock up as long as the system is working. (though they probably have them anyway as a fail-safe)

You seem to be confused about brake types. "Disc brakes" refers to a type of brake arrangement that replaced "drum brakes" which were the industry standard for decades. There was a time when drum brakes were the latest greatest thing. Before that time there was a type of brake involving something I have heard referred to as "binders", where the brake element was on the outside of a drum rather than shoes pressing from inside a drum.

Prior to binders were the most primative kinds of brake such as were employed on horse-drawn dreys where a wooden skiff actually pressed against the outer surface of a wheel. This type of brake was disasterous on early motorized machines, especially those fitted with rubber or, worse yet, inflatible tires.

Antilock brake systems use a computer to monitor and control the braking system. The computer monitors the rotational speeds of the wheels and then releases the brakes when the wheels are about to lock up. If the wheels lock up, the car will start to slide and if the fromt brakes lock up you will not be able to steer.

Disc brakes are a description of the type of braking mechanism on the wheel/wheels. Four wheel disk means all 4 wheels have disc brake mechanisms. The other type of mechanism is known as a drum brake which are almost absolete, they are usually on the rear of a vehicle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disc_brakes
A.B.S. is a acronym for anti lock brakes which can be utilized on any type braking mechanism, regardless if disc or drum. http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/Equipment/absbrakes.html
