When it was discovered that the galaxies are moving away from each other the best way to account for it was to assume that a great explosion took place at some time long ago, this explosion involved all of the mass in the universe.

A long time ago, the universe had an extremely high density, which was (and still is), on the largest visible scale at least, homogeneous and isotropic. It has been expanding ever since, resulting in a decreasing mean density.
That's the basics. eri summarizes the two principle lines of evidence for this. The details of the description, such as whether or not it was and is finite or infinite in extent, change now an then as different observations and theories are made.

Big bang theory is fiction, the whole universe could be transfered in a blink of the eyes or faster than that. An atheist
only based on his perception and defination of astro physics only based on theory even though the observation made on the universe confirmed its finding. It did not understand the theory of lights. Black is also colour that permeate the universe. In the Al Quran the moon is split into two confirmed in the holy book as well as history of the Prophet Muhammad pbuh. Where does the theory comes from, Stephen? Colliding
meteorites is not big bang. I prefer to stick to Newton or Albert Enstein. Sorry!

1) Expansion and acceleration of the universe, as showed by Hubble and more recently distance supernovae.
2) Microwave background radiation, as observed by COBE and WMAP.
