Math uses a whole different set of skills and different parts of your brain. It is also one subject where just reading and writing are not likely to help you really understand the subject. You actually have to apply the concepts you are learning to new and different situations again and again to really grasp the whole meaning. As mathematics courses progress you use more concepts and deeper concepts to solve problems.

Finally, in most any course you can 'fake it' if you have a good vocabulary and turn in your assignments regularly. If you don't understand a mathematical concept, you can't just talk your way around it, because you are having to apply what you are learning to solve problems (and most have unique solutions, unlike the majority of other subjects).

People just think it's hard because you have to learn how to think differently than something like history which requires more memorization and spitting back answers. Math makes you think critically. What I like about math is there is a right answer and a wrong answer. Unless you are taking higher level math, it is pretty black and white. There are defined rules and organization, unlike most other subjects which can get pretty subjective.

It isn't harder than anything else it just requires more work. Advanced math has problems with lots of steps and a lot of opportunities to make mistakes. People hate making mistakes and getting confused which is why math isn't very popular. Plus a lot of people, like myself, are right-brainers and things like math just don't come as easily to us.

Some people just don't have number-oriented brains, like me. My brain soaks up all things literary---I can analyze a sonnet, interpret figurative language in literature, spell just about any word--but when it comes to math I'm just no good. It's something I've lived with since I was very little.
