In an armed conflict, one man's "terrorist" is another man's "freedom fighter".
American colonists would have been called terrorists by the British if the concept had existed back then.
In other words, it's a matter of perception.
If someone is committing a wrongful act that is not within the context of an armed conflict, then that person is simply a criminal.
All harmful acts perpetrated against others create "terror" in the minds of their victims, so the term "terrorist" really doesn't have any independent meaning at all.
But to answer your question more technically, most people have never experienced an act of "terrorism" as they presently define it, so they're only basing their views on what someone else has described for them.
Like I said, it's all really a matter of perception. "Terror" is an emotion, not a tangible thing. So truthfully "terrorism" can't be quantified or reduced to anything other than an intangible emotive reaction.

Well, a terrorist would be someone that flies planes into buildings, killing thousands, wait what am I thinking, that was a huge conspiracy and cover up made by the Bush administration, right? A terrorist would be someone who blows car bombs up or shoots at American troops. I don't know what you are thinking the definition of terrorist is but you are BLIND if you think they are nonexistent in our world today. Did you know that kindergartners across the United States fear Global Warming more than terrorists?

If the "terrorists" were selecting only military targets then I do not think they are terrorists. However, purposely targetting civilians that have nothing to do with the military than they are terrorist. There is also saying that one mans terrorist is another mans patriot. What would you call people who kill innocent people on an almost face to face basis?

People who commit violent acts to achieve a political agenda are known as terrorists. I do not need the mainstream media to tell me who are terrorists and who are not.
I am also not intimidated by the terrorists or their apologists. If you and your little groups continue down your violent paths the US military will have to destroy you. So far you have been a mere annoyance but once the US people have had enough you days on the planet will be over.
Have a nice day.

Let's examine that question a bit:
The Islamic radicals routinely slaughter thousands of innocent men, women and children to further their agenda of hatred and domination. They cut innocent peoples heads off just to make another video. Throw a wheel chair bound victim into the ocean. Drag burned and mutilated bodies through the streets. Fly jet liners into skyscrapers. Bomb religious ceremonies and crowded market places. Shoot school children in the backs. Threaten annihilation of adjoining countries. I could go on, but you get the picture.
I call them terrorists because any other terms I can think off would be replaced with asterisks when I post the answer.

A terrorist is someone who engages in an act of terror to hope to accomplish a political or military goal. In some cases, terror is the only means they have to attack militarily. Starngely enough, be it the circumstances or the rationale, it seems that most terrorists are fundamentalist Islamic fanatics. This is not to say all Muslims are terrorists, but thyat most terrorists are Muslims. Go figure that one out in your religion of peace.

Look up, the definition of terrorist. That is why I call terrorists what I do, it has nothing to do with what other people say and absolutely NOTHING to do with what the media has to say about it.

We call people Terrorists because they call us Infidels. They say we're like pigs and can be killed, I say they're like ants and can be squished. Long as there is no respect from their side ( and they believe anyone not like them is of no importance, witness them blowing up civilians, not governments or military targets ), then they're just Terrorists that need to be sent on to Nirvana ahead of schedule, or wherever they go after they die.

Because I know what I am talking about. I disagree with the new outlets for NOT calling terrorists what they are.

A terrorist is one who uses terror as a form of evangelism, along with genocide. What have you been watching?
