Dood, you need a thermostat. It opens when your car reaches operating temp, and circulates the water through the heater core, and cools the engine. If the thermostat doesn't open, no water circulates...thus the cold pipe on the right side of rad, no heat from vents because the water isn't making it to the heat core, and overheating.

If it is the pipe that goes to the bottom of the radiator then it is probably the thermostat not opening. In this case both pipes to and fromt he radiator are likely to be cold.
If it is the pipe that comes from the top of the radiator then it is likely a blocked/ restricted radiator.

There will be an airlock in your cooling system. I had the same problem with my peugot, only i had a breather valve attached at the back so i could bleed out the air. Not sure if there is one on the mondeo.

problem could be air lock, thermostat, head cylinder gasket, water pump
1] airlock, depends what car you have, but they should be a valve on you hose coming from matrix heater on the bulkhead or next to thermostart.start the engine and open the valve do it in till pipe is hot and you get heat inside the car.always watch the water reservior add water when needed.if steam comes out of the valve, let it out untill you see water should clear up airlock.
2] thermostart, next to the head cylinder you should see thermostarthousing.it looks like bit of metal on top of cylinder head with a hose going in to it.unscrew the two bolts and take it out.test it by attaching piece of string and puting it in pot see if it opens up.if it dose not change it.
3]cylinder head gasket, look for deposit of oil in the water reservoir and white/yellow gunge in the reservoir and inside head rocket cover gasket by opening the oil cap up and looking into it.
4]water pump, pull out top hose first and start the engine to see if the water pumps out. if not try bottom hose if no water comes out water pump faulty.

This is usually and indicator of a bad thermostat But would check coolant level first. If coolant level is good replace thermostat.
Good Rob
