Sometimes, the key will not turn all the way over. If I keep trying, and sometimes moving the steering wheel, it will finally turn all the way over. Occasionally, it will start up on the first try. However, it seems to be getting worse. What could be causing this and how much should I expect it to cost to fix? This is a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier.

I have a spare key and tried it - same results. To the one who referred to the "fat man column" - I'm about average size, so it's not that.

I could check the position of the steering wheel in the future; it just seems to be happening too often to be that. If it is inded $100 or less, that sounds good. I was thinking over $300.

First thing is look at the Key and see if it is extreamly worn if so get a new one if not you may need to replace the ignition switch. Price varies depending on who you go to but usually under $100.00 Good luck

Are you talking about the motor turning over or just the key? If you are talking about the key not turning, then it sounds like the steering wheel is locked. Have you tried making sure the steering is turned straight when you park the car? If you are parking with the wheels turned it will cause problems to turn the key because the steering is in a bind. You need to give more details whehn asking these questions.

the first part sounds like the steering lock device, put the key in and wiggle the steering wheel and it will allow you to turn the key all the way.

Sounds normal to me, when you take the key out, and turn the wheel it will not allow you to move the wheel too much in either direction, it's a security measure........As long as I'm understanding this right

No big deal get a new key made at good key shop where they can check in ign. Also be aware when car is parked with steringwheel in cramp position you need to apply a small amount of pressure to release the lock dog on steringcolum.

Sounds like you need a new key -

That or a new column -

I call it fat man column: from hitting the tilt to get in and out to many times.

Get it fixed NOW.
If you wait untill it doesn't work at all, expect to spend hundreds of dollars instead of $60.
