And who attacked the Bay of Pigs?

From what I remember;

Russia wanted to become the new federal government in Washington, D.C. Reason? We have a lot of land and natural resources. And not as cold as Russia.

Russia figured they would use Cuba to make the attack. So we would attack Cuba after the a-bombs fell on us. Not attack Russia.

Thought our President would back down. He did not. They fired their missles at us. We fired our missles back - at Russia. Both sides destroyed their missles before they reached land. We came THAT CLOSE to a nuclear war. Told NO ONE about it for 40 years.

The Bay of Pigs where Cuban citizens, trained in the US, were going to overthrow the Cuban government. Our government said we would give them airplane backup. We did not. They were captured. Decision NOT to help them was made by President Kennedy. Same guy who pushed the button to fire the missles at Russia.

I think the individual suggesting that Russia wanted to become the "new federal government" in Washington D.C. is a bit off the mark. The Soviet Union wanted to spread communist government to the Western Hemisphere. They had a perfect opportunity in Cuba after Cuban leader Fidel Castro staged a coup overthrowing the Cuban Government and set up a fledgling communo-socialist regime there. The Russians took this opportunity and placed ballistic missiles on the island of Cuba. President Kennedy stated that it would be the policy of this nation that any missile attack or threat of aggresion against any country in the Western Hemisphere would be considered an attack on the U.S., setting the stage for a dangerous showdown.
Russia, and her proxy, Cuba, and the U.S. entered into talks to get the Russians to remove the missiles. The Russians stalled so the U.S. established a naval blockade of Cuba to prevent any more missiles from reaching the island. This is technically an act of war and created serious tensions on the world stage.
For thirteen days we were literally on the brink of nuclear war. Had it happened it would have resulted in the destruction of both nations without a doubt. In the end, Soviet Premier Krushchev told Kennedy in a teletype letter that it would be best "if we two didn't tug at the knots of war" and agreed to remove the missiles.
The bay of Pigs invasion occurred earlier and was an attempt to remove Fidel Castro from power. The U.S., through the C.I.A., trained a force of Cuban exiles to attack Cuba at The Bay of Pigs. The attack failed, the exiles captured and Castro bragged about how he defeated the most powerful military on Earth.
Good times!

The missile crisis, so called, was because the Soviet Union was trying to put war missiles based in Cuba, ninety miles of the shore of the US. Kennedy forced the Russians to remove the missiles, but what many do not know is that in return, Kennedy agreed to remove US missiles from Turkey where they were aimed at the USSR. Call it all a draw even though the Kennedys keep alive the myth that Jack Kennedy was that courageous president who stood up top Russia and won.

Chow!!
