Steven Hawking was the first one to come up with the idea, but there is as yet no real proof that they exist. Because they pull everything into them, even light, we have no way of seeing them. We know that they are there because the gravity they exert changes the motion of nearby bodies. We can see that there is something pulling a planet or star and have to hypothesize that there is a black hole there.

well, originally a man named Karl Schwarzschild was the first person to solve the formula of the black hole. However, he died very shortly after this and Einstein, in his theory of relativity, describes the Schwarzschild solutionj. This solution describes the gravitational field outside a spherical, non-rotating mass such as a planet, star or black holr.
Now, who has proven black holes to be true but the one and only Stephen Hawking.

While the idea of an object with gravity strong enough to prevent light from escaping was proposed in the 18th century, black holes as presently understood are described by Einstein's theory of general relativity, developed in 1916.
