"We care about moral issues, nobility, decency, happiness, goodness—the issues that matter in the real world, but which can only be addressed, in their purity, in fiction." --Orson Scott Card, Hatrack, The Unofficial Site of Orson Scott Card

My suggestion would be The Books Of The New Sun by Gene Wolfe. There are 4 voulmes. The Shadow of the Torturer The Claw of the Conciliator The Sword of the Lictor The Citadel of the Autarch. There was a fifth book, The Urth of the New Sun, but it is merely an add on and not really necessary. These lean a little bit towards fantasy, but they are well written and very dark and include many things you find in ordinary sci-fi.
