Check some skateboarding sites like the Thrasher board or Concrete Disciples to get a good idea on boards and you can get a good board at a skateshop, try to stay out of places like Walmart.

Depends...Are you looking for a board that is light, sturdy? Not all boards are the same, some are heavier than others. Like Blind Skateboards were thicker and heavier, while borads like ZOO York and Flip are light and have a wave design. What I would suggest it go to your nearby skate store and ask them.

The best brand for the board is Zeros or Hook-ups if you do kick flips, if you do verts, elements is a good heavy board.

usually go to your local skateshop, there pretty noticeable.
If you are a begginer I reccomend the powerlite by element, if you have been skating for a while the featherlite also by element. Get red bearings, indipendent trucks, and wheels dont wake thyat big of a difference just ask the owner what he reccomends

no dude do not get a long board unless all you want to do is ride but if you want to do tricks do not get a element they arent all that great. zoo york is only good for making cloths. and zero snaps to easy you need a flip, popwar. toy machine. or hook ups. those are pretty good. get bones reds there cheap and last a good while. independents are too heavy get tensors or phantoms
good luck man!

DONT GET ELEMENT! Even though there a pro board they WILL have bad wheels/grip tape/berrings/trucks otherwise i would get a long board, they look cool, feel cool and it makes you a little different.
great websites!
