It is an affectation to broadcast their sexual orientation and to define the group. Compare to Blacks with "ask" vs. "ax" and "fifty" vs. "fiddy" that arise from cultural cognitive deficits.

Gay men often shape their mouths in a particular way and have certain speech mannerisms. As they associate with each other gays in clubs bars etc they often pick up these mannerisms in much the same way as someone picks uo a foreign accent when they go to live in another country. These mannerisms and speech differences identify them as gay. if they walk camp, dress effeminately - then so much more of a givaway!

Why do straights have a hard time not stereotyping people?
There are all kinds of gays, honey, and most of them you'd never know it.

What you're talking about is a "lisp". A lot of people have it, even non-gays.
In conclusion, stop being stereotypical. I know plenty of gays who can talk without a lisp.
