Trust
Darn tough to define in one word. Read Anthony Giddens, or Simmel. Money is a kind of trust since it represents a in-time suspended, mutual agreed-on piece of transaction or physical labour.
If the bomb fell tomorrow, money would be the first thing to go. Because if there is no institution behind to garantee and augment the "trust" that money is, no-one would use it. So money is a kind of "trust" suspended in time, and agreed upon by the members of the relevant society.

Glue!
Facilitator! Even though it could be used in wrong ways, like everything powerful, it has the ability to connect people for a cause. Its true cause is to drive the economic trade system for the society.
