Hi all last week at my 36 week ultrasound they discovered the amniotic fluid had gone from 17 to only 10 within a week period of time.
I am having weekly scans due to gestational diabetes.
I suspect I have been leaking fluid on and off for a week or so but on exam the doctors found no evidence of this.
What makes the fluid go down...is this normal?
Thanks all.

Welcome to the club! Most moms with GD are monitored via non-stress tests because of the potential size of their babies... and because the larger the baby gets, the more room it needs... and their bodies displace the amniotic fluid. Also, as the cervix begins to dilate and efface, you may begin to leak fluid.

I went fro an 8 to a 5.25 in three days with my youngest and was not allowed to leave the hospital (I was induced). It's normal for us GD moms, unfortunately, but your doctors will be careful in monitoring you. Be sure to ask them if you have any questions or concerns, and good luck!

I experienced this when I was pregnant with my first. At 36 weeks they told me my fluid was low.

I did not have any risk factors and was staying well-hydrated, so who knows what caused it? My son was born at 37.5 weeks and was perfectly healthy and weighed nearly 7 pounds, so the fluid level did not cause a problem.

Your body constantly replenishes amniotic fluid so I would not worry too much. If fluid levels get dangerously low (which is rare) they can supplement you with fluid until birth.

It's also possible that the ultrasound is not accurate. Keep in mind, it is not always a perfect science.

Best of luck!

The Baby is possibly drinking the fluid. However if you have any concerns about this then you need to call the doctor regardless of weather its time for your next appointment or not if its after 36 weeks then there isn't a whole lot of risks in taking the baby early if they have too.

I would guess your right on the money...Just leaking due to being 36 weeks along. It seems like quite a bit to not notice though. At the same time my first child was 3 weeks earlyso your could be just right around the corner...just hang in there and listen to your body and the doctors...If something doesn't feel right get to the hospital ASAP...better to be a worried mom! Congrats!

I'm not really sure what makes it go down, but i never had that problem when I was pregnant with my four children.
